Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME) is a preliminary treatment procedure that aims at enlarging the maxillary arch and the palate to re-establish balance between the width of the jaws. This procedure is also called “maxillary expansion”. It's indicated when the upper jaw is too narrow compared to the lower jaw. The Rapid Maxillary Expansion is a procedure used for midpalatal suture opening by means of fixed orthodontic appliances, during growth. This often causes an abnormal dental relationship and/or deviation of the lower jaw.
